Like magic exploding in the clouds it comes down in many drops. It is elusive as quiet desert nights and stormy seas. We need water. The universal solvent. Pliable, reliable, water. Writers need to be pliable like water. It takes on many forms. It takes the shape of the container it is poured into but it is still, water. It doesn’t lose its identity.
The Department of Poetic License is made up of people from all disciplines, ages, races, economic and social backgrounds. We are those different containers. Grocery store clerks, students, teachers, scientist, musicians, politicians, sanitation workers, law enforcement, construction, office workers, you name it. There are also people in the DPL who are magicians, mimes, ventriloquist, dancers, and singers. We are the many FACES of YOU. What we have in common is that we love writing. We made the discovery (some perhaps sooner than others but it doesn’t matter) that writing is in our DNA.
It is good to be in touch with the world of writers. Step out of your comfort zone and find out what works for those who are successful, more experienced. Herein lies the rub, who defines WHAT is a ‘SUCCESS’? Is it our money and fame driven society? We live in a world of instant gratification. So what happens if the money and fame never comes or doesn’t come for a while? Would all of your writings, all of your poetry have been in vain? Would you give up writing because no one is telling you how good or great you are? If writing is in your DNA. It wouldn’t matter what people think. You write anyway. Why? Because you already know you’re a success. You know you are ENOUGH.
Visit poetry blogs, subscribe to poetry magazines and journals and READ. When you’re not writing get out there and socialize. Just because you’re a writer doesn’t mean you have to be a recluse. Show your face at poetry readings, attend writing seminars and if you can afford to, go on writer’s retreats.
Find those peaceful moments to sit by the water. Take in a sunrise or a sunset. Remember, we’re writers. We are like water. Water gives us what we need. Yet wants nothing but respect for what it gives. Well, we must go for now .As much as we enjoy visiting with you we must flow on. It is time that we mime our own business. All this talk about water is making some of us want to go swimming, fishing, sailing and surfing. And some of us are even getting a little thirsty. But before we part ways, lets pour ourselves a nice glass of refreshing water. Ahh…. Well, HERE’S to US! HERE’S to YOU! HERE’S to POETRY!
