Now that you have made that conviction in your heart to become a writer, a poet. Not only have you given yourself a poetic license; you have also given yourself the keys to the kingdom. Words are now your royal servants. They want to serve you. You have the power to make them do what you want them to do. They carry your message. Words are the vehicles in which we choose to express ourselves. We can either build or destroy. When we speak or write we can choose words of love or hate, and everything in between. But with that power comes responsibility and accountability.

Unlock the door of Impossibilities

Poetry can open up so many avenues. Many roads that will lead to many places. Don’t be afraid to make a move. Reading poetry written by other poets and hearing other poets read their work can broaden your horizons. You will eventually find your own voice and style.

And try as you might poetry doesn’t have to always rhyme to be alright. The important thing is not to lose sight of what you want to say. Don’t sacrifice your soul just to please others. Be true to you.

You have the keys to the kingdom. Open another door and see where it leads. You will be amazed at all the wonderful tools the kingdom provides. You will be able to direct the marching sounds of alliteration and the magical movement of metaphors. And there are many other tools and forms to mold your words into (if you want structure) or you can let them roam like grazing sheep. It is up to you.

This wonderful exploration can even lead to other forms of writing. You may want to experiment with writing a journal (for your eyes only), a short story, a novel, essays and YES, even your own blog. Who knows. Just remember to share what you’ve learned when you can and be willing to encourage and support other writers. As it has been said, ‘the only way you can keep it is by giving it away.’

You have the keys. Your kingdom awaits you. Your royal subjects are standing by. NOW. It’s your move.
