Come on in. Our door is always open. Here at the DPL we are taught to be public servants. We want to help you bring out your best. We don’t care about how many college degrees you have or lack thereof . A lot of education is great , of course , but it isn’t necessary to write or even to be a good writer. Sometimes we need to be like both an astronaut and a mechanic. You might be thinking ; what a contradiction. Picture yourself feeling weightless like an astronaut doing a spacewalk. Every movement is slowed down, floating. That’s the problem with the world today. Sometimes we can’t slow down enough to let our thoughts catch up to us. We’re so busy rushing to the next thing when we haven’t fully realized the first. Running, running, running. Rushing, rushing, rushing. Going nowhere fast. It’s okay. Slow down…heal…feel. Absorb life like a sponge.
We can’t write as fast as we can think. So we must slow down. Try this exercise at home or at the office (could be dangerous if you’re crossing the street) , pick an object, chair, bookcase, whatever and walk your normal walk but walk as slow as you can from object to object. Swing your arms like you normally would when you walk. Not easy, right. It becomes a balancing act. It’s an exaggerated exercise and takes a little bit of time, but it is good practice at slowing down. We call it ‘spacewalking’ while being right here on earth. Who says you can’t be an astronaut, although you may want to try this by yourself at first, other people may think something is wrong with you.
Being a mechanic grounds us. We hone in on our craft. We get our hands dirty. We yield to the power of gravity but we don’t completely submit because we know that we can fly. The astronaut and the mechanic. Slow but methodical. Word mechanics arranging words on a page, expressing our inner most thoughts; taking out, putting in, fixing, tweaking and doing this over and over until we’re ready to polish it (like a jeweler) into a finished piece.
So remember to slow down. Do a physical or (and) mental spacewalk. Then it’s time to go to work. Nuts, Bolts and Gears. Get moving! Get involved in the process. And let the out come take care of itself.
