There isn’t anyone here at the DPL who has actually ran with the bulls. There are some of us who have counted bulls instead of sheep to try to go to sleep. And there are a few of us who would like to experience running with the bulls. Some who want nothing at all to do with it and some who would like to learn more about this tradition of ‘running with the bulls ‘, without running with the bulls. However, those who said that they would like  a hands on experience of  running with the bulls came to the same conclusion; that they hope to be fast enough to keep up with the front of the pack.

Some would probably see it as running ‘from’ the bulls rather than running ‘with’ the bulls. It’s the little words that get you. Words like ‘with’ and ‘from’. Most people don’t want to run ‘with’ the IRS. They would rather run ‘from’ the IRS, especially if they knew they could get away . Trust us when we say (if you don’t already know), you can RUN but you can’t HIDE.

It is good to keep in mind that what we may consider small words ( for example: for, with, to, from, shall) can dramatically change the meaning of a sentence. They can become BIG words. They can become rather ‘bullish’. If you said someone did something ‘for’ you; it may suggest that someone helped you in some way. But if you said someone did something ‘to’ you; it may suggest that someone wronged you in some way.

Don’t lose sight of those small words. We may sometimes look at them like sacrificial pawns on a chess board. They are not insignificant. Remember a pawn can capture a much more powerful opponent like a knight or a queen or even put a king in check or checkmate if the king is in the wrong spot and the pawn in the right one.

Running with (or from) the bulls can be an adrenaline rush. So can writing poetry. We know you have a poem inside you just waiting to come out. So write. Write when you feel good. Write when you feel bad. Write when you feel indifferent, or ugly or beautiful. Just keep on writing and you will experience a sense of fulfillment never known before.

So go ahead. You don’t have be afraid anymore. Grab the bull by the horns. Take inventory. What are you running with, from, to…? Write that poem. Give it wings to fly. Then release it like a dove.
